Having an allergy attack can be mighty inconvenient especially if the effects of the allergy attacks are large-scale and I do mean “scale” in the literal sense. Skin rashes and breakouts can occur as well as the usual sneezing and runny nose.
Allergy attacks can of course be easily avoided provided that you do not come in contact or do not ingest allergens, substances that trigger your allergy. This, however, is easily said than done especially for people who are allergic to dust mites, animal hair and insect fecal material that may be found in every corner of your home.
While some people turn to medications to provide them relief from allergy attacks at home, there is no harm in helping relieve allergy attacks by minimizing its occurrence.
Allergy relief at home can be done by making sure that the home environment is allergen-free.
Here are some “home” remedies that can relieve allergy attacks at home:
1. Controlling dust mites can be difficult as the organisms are so small that you will not be able to see them. Therefore, it is important that you keep your home, especially your room as clean as possible. Clean the room at least once a week and if possible, use a vacuum cleaner. Vacuum cleaners get rid of dust and skin flakes that can often be found in chairs, tables and beds, where we frequently stay.
2. Dust mites frequently inhabit the bed and the sheets. To kill off dust mites, wash your sheets and blankets in hot water. There are also special covers available in the market which encase mites and their fecal material in a place where you cannot come into contact with them.
3. Choose pillows that are made of synthetic material as dust mites do not often stay in those kinds of materials. The use of zippered covers also minimize the possibility of the dust mites getting out.
4. Minimize the use of really thick beddings and covers such as comforters and chenille bedspreads. Materials like that easily gather dust, where dust mites may inhabit. Carpets, books and stuff animals should also be removed as dust mites love to stay on these things.
5. No matter how much you love your pet, keep your dog or cat out of your room. Pets produce skin flakes and dander, which dust mites so love!
6. Purchase a dehumidifier to help maintain the temperature in the room. Dehumidifiers help in preventing the growth of molds, which contribute in allergy attacks at home. Also, it has been found that relative humidity can deter the growth of mites by as much as 40 percent.
7. It also might prove to be a good idea to purchase a room air cleaner which can be really helpful in removing airborne fecal material as well as molds.
8. Remember that molds and dust mites can also inhabit in the clothes that we keep in the closet. To prevent this from happening, make sure that you always keep the closet doors close so that dust will not come in. Occasionally, clean the closet and air it out by removing all its contents.
9. If there is no vacuum cleaner, you can also use as an alternative electrostatically-charged clothes and mops, which attracts dust. This is much more advisable that mere wiping off a surface area or dusting it as dust tend to return afterwards.
